The Style Diary: Stylist and fashion blogger Aideen Feely
Each fortnight, we catch up with one of our favourite bloggers, models and celebrities to talk all things beauty and style. We’ll present you with a voyeuristic insight into the products and pieces that make them look and feel good.
This week, it’s Dublin stylist and fashion blogger, Aideen Feely.
I only really got into makeup about three years ago. Before that I’d use anything on my face. When I was in college, my friend would come into the class glowing. I’d ask her so many questions about what products she used. Eventually, I tried every foundation and found my favourite, which is Mac Mineralise Foundation. I feel it works best on my skin and with my skin tone. After that, I kept testing new products such as concealers, bronzers and brow kits until I was happy with the way it looked. I still like to try new products and switch it up when I can.
I never got the hang of applying eyeshadow, ever! It’s so hard to choose the right colours that complement each other, and I could never blend, so it would always blend into the one colour, which wasn’t the idea. So, that is something to go on the New Year resolution list.
My daily make-up routine is a lot simpler than my evening routine. I tend to stick with the same products. I find it easier and quicker to apply so that I can start my day. I always use Mac Mineralise Foundation for a soft and dewy look. Then I’ll apply Nars concealer under my eyes, forehead and bridge of the nose. It gives a glowy yellow tone and is so easy to blend. Next, I add my Michael Kors bronzer. I love the golden complexion after I use it. My brows are pretty thick, so I’ll shape them with Sleek’s powder based brow kit and brush them upwards. To finish I'll add my favourite mascara, Rimmel Scandeleyes in Show Off and NYC nude lipstick and liner.
I love switching up my make-up for evening. If it’s a red lip or cat eyes, I’ll always try something new. One thing I play with in the evening is contouring and highlighting. I use the Isa Dora Contouring Trio; it has the best shades to do both, and it’s less fuss with the same results.
I don’t wear a lot of fragrance, but I recently got the new Miu Miu Eau de Parfum, and I really like it.
My morning routine usually involves a cleanser, toner and moisturiser. I have used Philosophy skincare range for the last year. It’s so good for hydrating the skin! I pretty much love it.
My skin is sensitive, any irritation can cause redness and veins to appear on my skin. I now use Boots Botanics Ultra Skin Relief serum to help calm it down.
On a Sunday evening I will give my skin a little more TLC. I exfoliate with No7 Beautiful Skin for sensitive skin. Then apply GlamGlo Thirsty mud mask to prepare my skin for the week ahead.
It’s not often I get to treat myself to a beauty treatment, but when I do I go to The Next Door Spa for a high intense deep cleansing facial.
At night I’m a little lazier, so I use Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water. It removes all of my make-up in seconds. You can get it cheap in Penneys, so I never run out. Once all my make-up is removed, I’ll apply No7 Beautiful Skin Night Cream. The odd time I will put some coconut oil on my skin at night.
I have dry hair, so I am always looking for something that will lift and soften it. What’s working for me right now is L’Oreal Ever Pure shampoo and conditioner, it treats coloured hair too so it’s great for shine.
I tend to wear my hair down a lot, usually with a kink in it or a wave using the GHD Curve. It’s so easy to create an effortless and natural look and it gets the job done in minutes. On a bad hair day, I loosely throw it into a low ponytail or bun. But I would gladly take a good hair day over a good make-up day. I think it completes the look.
I’ve been black, blonde, copper... all of that before but I always go back to my natural dark brown, so I think I’ll stick with that for the time being. Regarding hair length, I would love to get the chop! It’s something that’s on my mind lately so who knows, we’ll see what’s to come.
River Island is my favourite place to shop at the moment. It's super trendy with the best staple pieces and it’s where I get all my sweatshirts, tees and jeans, so it’s the best of both worlds. I also love Om Diva - it’s mainly driven by Irish designers who have unique pieces you won’t find anywhere else.
My last splurge was on a pair of boots by The Kooples at Kildare Village. I wear heels a lot, so I needed a pair with a smaller heel to be comfortable in when I am pulling for shoots and when I’m on the go.
I’m always out and about, so I’ll reach for a turtle neck, some jeans with a long tailored coat. I love anything with a high neck. For an evening out, there is nothing better than a buttoned-down two piece suit with a choker necklace. It’s one of my favourite looks.
I take my style inspiration from the street style stars Elena Perminova and Miroslava Duma. There is a certain chicness about them.
Out and about
Being a stylist means I’m constantly in the middle of all the best shops and cafés, so I love trying them all out. But at the moment, I get my coffee in Kaph on Drury Street, they also have delicious cakes. I’m looking forward to trying out the new Laduree café on South William Street.
I don’t go out often, so I’m not too familiar with the nightlife scene. Mainly I go to Soder & KO with friends. We tend to get there a little earlier to get a table and maybe some food before the crowds hit. Lately, I’ve ventured out to places nearby like Fade Street Social and Drury Buildings.
When I’m getting ready I turn on my iTunes and crank up the volume on the speakers. My most played song has to be Mariah Carey Last Night a DJ Saved My Life from the Glitter album. It’s not very current, I know.
Outdoor activities are limited due to the weather for me, but if a good day comes around I’d take a trip to Powerscourt Estate or somewhere like that. It also gives me a chance to take some pictures for my blog.
After a busy a week, my favourite thing to do is binge out on watching Netflix. I could get a whole series done in a day.
I stayed in the Europe Hotel in Killarney last summer, it has to be one of the most beautiful spots to holiday in Ireland and the scenery is incredible. But I love the city of Paris. Every time I go, there is something new to do. Strolling down back streets and trying the local food, I get excited even thinking about it.
I cut my hair every now and again, and hair stylists can always tell, it just gets so damn frizzy!
