It's a little early to put a bit of colour of the tan variety into your complexion, but just the perfect time to tweak your cheek colour. While it's in keeping with the season to still have your skin pale, you can add some interest by turning to spring-like shades of blusher.

  • Go To

Think pink, tending towards peach -- tones that suggest early blooms, exercise in the fresh air and general good health.

To achieve this, keep the brush strokes light and the colour as close as possible to a natural flush. You want to appear awakened from hibernation, rather than running a fever.

The five favourites this week are the best we found to banish the bleak from your cheeks.

They tend towards the peach-rose end of the spectrum and almost all have some class of sheen or shimmer to them, suggesting that what most of us want is to bring the glow back into our look.

Turning to the self-tan as soon as a single ray of sunshine breaks through is so last decade, so simply think glow this spring, as opposed to glow in the dark.

Best Overall

Price, and the quality you get for that price, was a major factor in deciding this as the best overall spring blush. Each of the blushes from this newly made-over German range features a matt and a shimmer option, which can be worn alone or blended, giving plenty of girlie options for very few cents. "The matt in this colour is very fresh-looking, it really wakes your face up," said one panellist, "and then, if you blend, it's really pretty, sheeny and surprisingly long-wearing."

Best Grown-Up Flush

Not a new release, in fact released last autumn, but, to our mind, a shade better suited to spring. A dusty rose that suits Irish complexions very well, as it adds a rosiness but tones down ruddiness, and there's just a nice hint of sheen to it that's adult but utterly enlivening. "I think this might be my favourite blusher ever," said one panellist. "I don't like my cheeks to be my major make-up feature, but this achieved the your-own-flush-but-better effect."

Best Blush in a Rush

Irresistibly handy, a silver tube, which you twist to open, brings a decent brush in contact with just the right amount of blush, also contained within. This is a peachy-pink shade, subtle but lively. "I hate the brushes you get with compacts, and I've dropped and broken more blushers than I care to count, so I love the knackiness of this, which doesn't come at the cost of product quality," said a panellist.

Best Ease into Spring

The graduated colour of the blush, which, in this shade, ranges from almost nude to a nice pinky-coral, means you can ease into spring brightness without fear. Used all together, the compact gives a nice brightening effect, as well as lending colour, and the silky finish feels particularly nice on the skin. "If you just can't do all the pinks that abound in blushers, this is a great choice," said one panellist. "I like the way you can play with the intensity, too."

Best Nice and Cheeky

Mac Mineralize Blush in Miss Behave, €24.50, Brown Thomas and BT2

From their limited-edition Quite Cute range -- on sale this month -- this is one of three satin-finish blushers with a central contrasting-colour, frost-finish heart. The blush is a medium peach, very smooth to apply, and it becomes almost like a pink highlighter and very sheer, when blended with the central silvery mint-green heart. "Surprisingly nice on," said a panellist. "I was expecting a disco-ball effect, but this is actually a nice handbag choice for day or night."
