The Panel: Best Volumising shampoos
The sad beauty-truth is that we all want what we don’t have and we spend a lot on products that promise to transform us into the opposite of what we are.
People with curly hair want it smooth and straight and anyone with fine hair wants it bigger and bolder, despite a lifetime of being disappointed by products that leave layers of body-sapping build-up. Add to that the fact that a lot of fine-haired folk also have the Irish curse of hair that is neither straight nor curly, and you have a huge demand for ramped-up hair without residue.
Our favourite body-building products were those that didn’t sacrifice shine for substance. They boosted roots and lifted limpness, but didn’t leave us with lengths through which you could barely pull a hairbrush. They made it look like we were naturally full-bodied, or suddenly granted someone else’s hair — the ultimate goal, it’s sad to say.
L’Oreal Elvive Nutri-Gloss Crystal Shampoo and Conditioner, both €5.35, available nationwide Superficially, these seem like a four-year-old girl’s hair-washing dream duo, because they’re not just pink, but sparkling too. Aimed at fine, dull hair, this fulfills its promise to deliver glossy hair that’s not weighted down, though if the idea of glitter (aka micro-crystals) through your hair tickles your fancy, then you might be disappointed. “The sparkles don’t actually show up as glitter in your hair — phew — but this definitely gives great shine as well as some oomph,” said one panellist. “It definitely scores well on lift without limpness.”
BEST DENSIFYING DUO
Kiehl’s Rice and Wheat Volumising Shampoo and Conditioner, both €17, Kiehl’s Boutique, 35 Wicklow St, D2 It’s the protein content of the rice and wheat that lend the advertised volume and, be warned, there is that moment with these where you wonder if they are just putting gunk in your hair. But they aren’t, though, and if you need to choose between them, we’d go with the shampoo. “If you can get over the fact that it doesn’t bubble up much, this is good stuff,” a panellist said. “It makes your hair fuller, but it stood up to daily use without residue build-up.”
BEST BODY BUILDER
HennaPlus Hairwonder Fluid-Hair Volumizer, €11.99, leading pharmacies and health stores nationwide Don’t let the mention of henna mislead you: this keratin-infused, vitamin-rich spray will not render you red. Apply to damp hair and allow to dry naturally for increased, natural-looking body, or blow-dry for super substance. “I’ve taken to straightening my hair as it's neither straight nor curly, but doing so can leave your hair looking flat and lank,” said a panellist. “After using this my hair had more body, without being at all Eighties.”
BEST FULLER FIXER
Joico Body Luxe Root Lift Volumising Foam, €11.50, selected salons nationwide, tel: (045) 856-490 Instructions say to apply this mousse to the roots, rather than the lengths of the hair, for the promised lifting effect. The lift comes with a sense of thicker hair, so style swiftly to avoid hair becoming too dense to brush through, but the product can’t be faulted for doing what it says on the tin. “It gives your hair a slight coating, which I’m guessing makes each strand thicker, but my hair seemed much fuller,” said a panellist. “It didn’t weigh my hair down, though, like a lot of volumising products can.”
BEST SHINY SETTER
Aussie Dual Personality Aussome Volume + Gloss Hairspray, €5.59, available nationwide If you find that even the most weightless of volume-bestowing products leave you denser but duller in the hair department, then give this a whirl. Sprayed into the hair’s roots, it lifts and sets as you would expect, but the gloss is a serious bonus, apparently the result of the sea kelp within. “My hair’s so fine that most products that add any coating leave it dead-looking, so anything giving volume and shine is great in my book. And this does what it says,” a panellist said.
