Maybe it's a wedding, maybe it's a party, or a barbecue or just an evening in the sunshine outside your local, but at times like these, we wish for something new to lend us the look of summer. It doesn't have to be much, just something that catches the sun, or lends a glow that speaks of sun on your skin. Sun-protected skin, obviously, but you know what we mean.

Summery make-up fosters a carefree feeling, so we all like to have a few bits of it in our cache. A simple summer tweak can alter everything - with bronzer or a cheek colour being the easiest way to make a difference. Nails are another cinch, and you can be brave, or keep it pale to accentuate the sun-kissed skin. We'll return to the best ways to fake that sun-kissed vibe another day.

Best Bold Nail

This is your touch of summer madness. There has to be a touch, surely? It's a pale lime green that has full-cover opacity with only two coats, and loads of glossiness. If you are very pale, it might look a little queasy on you, but a tan - fake or otherwise - makes it pop. The summer launch also boasts a pinky-red, if you prefer to keep it classic. "If you are less than daring with the rest of your look, nails like these add a hint-of-danger touch," said one panellist. "My nails got a lot of notice and my courage got compliments."

The jokes are too easy. This is a new addition to the ever-expanding Orgasm collection. It's a pump-action bottle of blush that will last a long, long time, as only the tiniest bit goes a long way - but what a wonder a tiny drop is. Dabbed on the cheeks, it lends a creamy, dewy interpretation of the peach-pink-gold of the original powder blush. "This is truly lovely," a panellist said. "Too much is easy to do, though, and leaves you looking like you have slapped-cheek syndrome, but a hint is summer-sexy."

Obviously, this is a brilliant bridal colour, but it's suitable for everyday 'have you seen my tan?' wear, too. A single layer gives a subtly sophisticated, super-clean-nails gleam, while extra layers add opacity. It's a pearlescent off-white, which may be too ghostly for some. They should check out My Vows, a pretty pearlescent pink. "My post-holiday tan looked nice with this," said a panellist, "and it gives a nice pale pearliness to any colour when it's worn as a top coat."

Best Summer Smile

This season, Clarins added four new shades to its existing Lip Comfort Oil line, and this is by far the most summery. A honey colour, as the name suggests, it has added shimmer, which gives a glistening, sun-setting-by-the-sea effect. Check out the new Mint variation, too. It's tingly on the lips, while the green colour is almost clear on the lips. "It felt like I was on my holliers the second I put this on," said one panellist. "It did the trick."

Best Bronze Beauty

Bronzer can make any face look instantly summery. The trick is getting the colour right. If you're pale, a deep bronze will make you look dirty. And if you have darker skin, steer clear of muddy or reddish shades, as they'll look brassy. Also, go easy with your bronzer brush; you're aiming for sun-kissed, not Ronseal-dipped. This finely milled, subtly shimmering powder comes in Starlight, a pale gold, and this warmer, more tanned shade. "A nice shade for my mid-pale skin," said a panellist. "Uplifting, but not sunbed-attack."
