SpaSpy: Anti-ageing pampering at Farnham Estate
The Farnham Estate and Spa comes as a bit of a shock for a girl confined to city horizons. Working out what to do with a grand country house,1,300 acres of Cavan countryside and a spa the size of a football field is a bit tricky when you call a tiny flat home.
An overnight stay is a must, as justice wouldn't be done with a flying visit,. For me, company just happened to be a reluctant Mr SpaSpy. Not being a walker, a golfer, or the least bit inclined to scrub-up at a spa, I sell him on promises of remote control fireplaces and a room with endless views. The room is his, the spa is mine and dinner would be at 8 sharp. I am through the doors of the spa quicker than you can say 'Yon-Ka facial'.
For most appointments arriving four hours early normally presents the problem of what to do in the meantime. Here it gives you just about enough time to drink it all in. Built around the cavernous stone archways of the original country estate, the sense of light and space is arresting. Huge glass walls, soft recessed lighting and the beams, vaults and original stone of what was the estate cowshed make for a tranquil space. By the time I have walked around, drenched myself in a water mint thermal suite, sampled the endless rows of mosaic foot spas, hit the sauna and made shapes in an outdoor/indoor infinity pool with views over of the rolling Cavan hills, my three hours are up and it is treatment time.
My treatment suite is twice the size of my entire flat, but after a lavender infused jet bath soothes away my stresses and I am laid out on a heated granite slab for a full body sea-salt exfoliation, I begin to understand why so much room is needed. The skin exfoliation is followed by a skin firming body balm, anti-aging blackcurrant face mask and scalp massage and when finally my peel is removed, I am left wishing I could just go back to the beginning.
After my five hours of pampered bliss, I am finally back in my room with views over lakes and the woodland beyond. After much commotion with an espresso machine and four hours of working out how the remote control for our log fire works, Mr SpaSpy has finally proved his worth as a country gentleman and provides us both with a blissful roaring log fire.
