Author, musician, actress, is there anything Hilary Duff can't turn her hand to? The fresh faced All-American star took a break from her gruelling book tour earlier this month to steal the show during the Lucky Shops VIP ball at the Metropolitan Pavilion in New York.

Dazzling in a little black dress by DVF the look was teamed with smokey eyes and Hilary's trademark crystal clear skin. Always one to strike the right balance between just enough and too little cover, Hilary always seems to make the most of her youthful complexion and we love the confidence of her latest look.

Despite the fact that the finished effect is clear, clean, simple and sultry, stealing Hilary's look isn't as easy as it might seem and as well as some careful prep you will have to accept that for this particular style less is most definitely more.

To get Hilary's look a natural finish is a must. Prepare skin with a touch of primer and apply a lightweight foundation like Maybelline's Dream Matte Mousse where needed. As this is particularly light, finger blending is recommended for a softer finish and keeping the touch light, the colour matched ( or even lighter in tone than your skin ) and leaving plenty of room for blending will help keep the finished base flawless.

While Hilary's base is kept completely natural her eyes take on more of a sultry look. Evening out skin tone around the eyes by applying an eyeshadow primer like Eye Base Essentials in Bare is essential and working from the lash-line to the brow bone will mean the finished effect blends perfectly with the rest of your calm complexion.

Continuing with eyes smudge a deep blue shadow like MAC's Contrast across the eyelid blending softly at the edges. Using a dark blue or matte shade might seem a little too calm but if you need some warmth or an extra extra flush add colour with blush rather than the eye palette. A touch of light pink like Benefit's Dandelion blusher to the apples of the cheeks is all the warmth needed. Finally, define eyes with a slick of liquid liner like Bourjois Liner Pinceau across the top lid and add a touch of lengthening mascara to the top and bottom lashes.

Hilary has kept her lips nice and neutral. Pucker up and prevent bleeding with a neutral liner like The Nude Lip Liner by Smashbox in Fair and brush apply a pale pink lipstick like Rituals Cream & Care Lipstick in Nude for a soft, even finish.

With her sultry eyes and flushed cheeks Hilary adds some swagger to the mix with some statement hairstyling. The make-up may be calm and flawless but the bed-head lends Hilary just the right amount of rock chick. By swapping her usual flowing locks with a pinned back but messy up do, Hilary adds a touch of flair to an overall style that is perfectly measured. The end result - a look that is effortlessly comfortable, effortlessly sexy, and the confidence defined.
