Makes Scents: The loveliest lotions and potions
Fancy some fragrant floral treats, make-up must-haves or cult body beautifiers? Triona McCarthy rounds up all the loveliest lotions and potions to keep you looking, smelling and feeling good
What I mist on my wrist changes in summer. I like lighter, softer, scents, reminiscent of sweet sunshine and balmy evenings.
This season’s summer fragrances are bursting with all the delighted elation and newfound energy we’ve
been experiencing recently with the hot weather.
So, when the temperatures soar and finally lift the weather-beaten roof off our rain-soaked island, spray on a new scent to celebrate!
I’ve been going gaga for the Tom Ford Neroli Portofino Collection for a while now. This summer, he’s added two new scents to it, Azzurra, and Mandarino Di Amalfi, left, both €178. I know, I know! But they are TDF — to die for.
If that price has shocked you, then you’re going to love this. L’Eau D’Issey by Issey Miyake, from €49, is my go-to summer fragrance. If summer mornings actually had a smell, it would be this scent.
Recently, however, model Sarah McGovern, who works with the Spanish perfume company, Saphir, sent me a fragrance called Guirnalda, which smells a lot like it, but it’s only €7.99, and available from pharmacies nationwide.
If you fancy something a little more daring, then try the new incarnation of the classic Alien fragrance, Alien Eau Extraordinaire, €80, which combines floral, woody and amber notes, to create a light and luminous scent.
If you’re a fruity fan, then Viktor and Rolf’s Bonbon, below, from €65, with notes of caramel and candied goodies, as well as fragrant woods, should do it for you. Sunny Alice by Vivienne Westwood, €63.50, is another big hit, with its fresh, feminine scent.
Every summer, ‘beachy’ waves are the most sought-after, oh-so-natural hairstyle, yet trying to achieve the look leaves me so frustrated.
I’ve finally devised my own home-made solution that — shock, horror — actually works. Spray your tresses with a mix of hot water, coconut oil and salt, and suddenly your hair is Barley Cove beautiful!

Maximum & minimum
Have you heard the news? I have a bun in my oven! Or should that be a Christmas cake, as it’s a December baby this time. When you’re nearly 100 years old, like I am, you have to push them out quite quickly. Maxi will be a year-and-a-half old when Mini comes along, but he told me he’s fine with his only-child status expiring in December.
So, yeah, expect lots of pregnancy-related lotions and potions for the next few months, such as Kiehl’s Creme de Corps Body Lotion, right, from €31.
You see, when I’m preggers, I get insanely dry skin everywhere, except on my face. It’s like all the oil glands in my body decide to hang out on my face, leaving the rest of me high and, literally, dry! This lotion, I find, works wonders. My skin soaks it up instantly, yet it moisturises efficiently. Best
of all, it doesn’t compete with my perfume and I can apply it in front of
Will or Maxi without asphyxiating them!
Many lotions, I find, are too runny upon application, but this has a lovely, thick consistency. It doesn’t feel sticky — like some other lotions I’ve been tirelessly trying recently — or like I have a mask over my skin and nearly need to go and shower again to get the icky, sticky feeling off.
Hot to trot
I’m all about staying cool and protected, but looking hot this summer! But how do I do this?
It’s simple really — I use Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer SPF 20 with Dermaxyl Complex, right, €34.50. I normally pop it on under my foundation or
BB cream, and that’s my protection sorted in one easy step. Best of all, it’s an anti-ageing primer, so it also reduces the appearance of fine lines and pores, making my skin look and feel super-soft.
It’s thanks to the Dermaxyl Complex, an advanced peptide treatment that’s clinically proven to reduce the appearance of wrinkles over time. It’s hot to trot!
Dear Space NK,
I love you.
That’s all. X
If you’re a beauty junkie like me and Jennifer Aniston, then you’re probably already a huge fan of Space NK. They’ve had a fab concession in Harvey Nichols for the past few years, which I visit loads, but now they’ve opened a new store on Grafton St, with over 50 brands exclusive to Dublin.
I nearly passed out with the excitement when I visited — so many products and only one head, face and body!
Space NK was founded in 1993 by Nicky Kinnaird, an Irish woman. Since then, she’s opened stores all over the UK and US.
I caught up with Nicky at the official launch.
I really want to be like her when I grow up — can you imagine owning beauty emporiums that dispense the most luxurious products in the world?
I’m ridiculously in love with this new eyeliner The Curve, from Nyx, right, €15.99, from pharmacies nationwide.
Having tried almost every liquid eyeliner out there, this is definitely the easiest to use.
I’ve never been able to do flicks without the help of tape or a credit card, or a spoon, but the lines this creates are even and consistent. The jet-black colour also has super staying power. It’s the innovative, ergonomic shape that makes application foolproof.
The grip zone provides just the right hold to make application precise, secure and effortless. So now it’s hard to use anything else after using this!
