A word of advice when you're buying a make-up palette - be it eyeshadow, blush, lip - don't be swayed by packaging.
Yes, I agree, it helps when something looks pretty, but palettes tend to be expensive, so you need to love almost all of the colours in it. And it's not even enough just to love all the colours in it, you need to be certain that you will use them. Otherwise, what's the point?
With eye palettes, make sure you choose one that has a good mix of textures, like say, Estee Lauder's Limited Edition bronze Goddess Palette. It contains both matte and shimmery, allowing you to achieve myriad looks for daytime and night time.
If you're unsure as to what shades suit you, opt for neutrals - like the Bobbi Brown Sand Palette, as it flatters every eye colour and shape.
Contouring and face sculpting is difficult enough without having to rummage around for the necessary colours, that's why one customised palette is a good investment. Inglot's Sculpting Powders are excellent, and the girls in-store will advise you on shades.
For cheeks, YSL's Rosy Glow Blush Palette contains a rosy, matte cerise, and a shimmery lighter pink hue, which are gorgeous worn together or alone. Clarins' Kit Sourcils 'Pro', which has been given a recent make-over, is more than just a brow palette. It has loads of tools in it for general face grooming, and the three brow shades work as eyeshadows, too, making it a handbag essential.
