Gwyneth Paltrow shares her perfume, and beauty, secrets
She owns fifty perfume bottles, wears a different fragrance by night, and scents her bathrooms with lilies; Gwyneth Paltrow talks about her signature scent style.
Actress and lifestyle guru Gwyneth Paltrow has always been into scent; by the time she was 14 she was already addicted to Anaïs Anaïs, then graduated to Calyx and Coco Chanel, and still remembers her mother's scent, the fresh jasmine Quadrille by Balenciaga. Now she says, she "prefers something a little more complex," just like Boss Nuit, of which she is course the face.
Apart from a complete aversion to anything perfumed during both her pregnancies, when she says "I couldn't even stomach the smell of orange juice from across the room, let alone flowers or fragrance", Paltrow is big into perfume - as it seems is her daughter Apple, "who sprays herself head to toe, though I'm trying to teach her that less is more. Me, I just spray a little on my left arm, press it against my right arm, and then dab behind my ears."
"I believe in a wardrobe of perfumes though," explains Paltrow. "I probably have around 50 at home, some I just like for the bottle, some I wear all the time; but whatever I choose, it has to make me feel feminine."
Switching between day and night fragrances, Paltrow goes for Boss Nuit, which she describes as "feminine and alluring" by night, though she adds "that could be because of the branding - good job guys. But," she goes on, "I love the way it feels like a little bit of an extra something, rather than a perfume pouring off me."
As for the rest of her beauty regime, "well, exercise is key. And I try to get a lot of sleep and avoid processed food. I'm not great at doing my own make-up, and just stick to a really, really thick moisturiser, particularly when I'm flying, and I love face oils."
Paltrow also talks of her "golden time" between dropping her kids off and up from school and working on her website, Goop , where she tries to do something for herself, to bring her "back into the body. Whether it's having a facial, meditating or seeing an osteopath."
"When I turned 40 I realised how overwhelming it was to always give to other people, so I made a commitment to myself to do something every week which would help me check in and regroup. It's important, and stops emotions overtaking you."
"If I try to do too much, I find it really stressful. So I build a cushion around what I have to do, even if it's just five minutes to breath. I only recently understood how taking time for yourself is so important, even if it's a walk with my dog on the heath, reading something interesting after bed."
Paltrow may be one of the ones who knows her fashion and fragrance style, but she says if you really want confidence, "know yourself. It's the key ingredient to empowering yourself; know your voice and be really, really true to yourself. That's key to how I want to live the second half of my life."
