Gossip girl star Leighton Meester is no stranger when it comes to making a style statement. The 24-year-old turned  heads at the Winston Jewels Launch in New York earlier this month, sporting a daring black lace and sheer off shouldered jumpsuit.

Whilst the look may have been no real departure from this Gossip Girl's style routine the make-up she styled was a brand new look. Far from pairing the outfit with barely there make-up Leighton went all out and teamed a purple lip with sparkling gold eyes. More Helena Bonham Carter than the preppy girl we're used to.

If you are lucky enough to have skin porcelain enough to work this then stealing Leighton's look is easy. Try mixing an illuminating foundation like Sheer Glow by Nars with a touch of moisturiser for a perfectly paired down finish. Imperfections can be ironed out using a light concealer like Rimmel's Recover Concealer although good blending is the key whatever the product.

With such a natural base those tell tale signs will be magnified so colour with a light bronzer like Benefits Dandelion across the apples of the cheeks and towards the hair line. Blend at the edges for a natural finish.

For the eyes Leighten kept the look light and neutral with a gorgeous shade of delicate gold eyeshadow. Even out imperfections with a sweep of nude shadow like Bourjois Little Round Pot in #08 Essential and add warm gold tones like Mac's Goldmine across the sockets bringing it slightly above the crease for a soft finish. A sweep of lengthening mascara like Double Wear Zero-Smudge Lengthening Mascara by Estee Lauder will complete the look.

As Leighton's bold lips are really there to make a statement purple hues are ideal for complementing dark hair. It isn't the look we're used to, but for the season this is stop em dead styling. Pale and interesting meets bold and classy. Avoid bleeding by lining with a nude pencil and then carefully apply a purple shade like Up The Amp by Mac. Finally, soften the tone and give lipstick some staying power by dabbing with a tissue.

Leighton complemented her daring outfit and lipstick combo with soft pinned hair whilst letting the odd strand tumble to keep the overall effect soft and feminine. As this is party season the look is great for fifteen minutes of fame but keeping it under control after a few glasses of Christmas cheer is a harder ask. Keep the pins handy and keep control with a spritz of hairspray.

While Leightons tribute to flapper girl grunge may not be for everyone, this is just perfect for her. Even though the overall effect is a little Tim Burton it's a good way off the Nightmare Before Christmas - crisp, twisted and sultry, we love this look !
