It would take a lot to draw our attention away from the all-important red carpet for this column, but for Gwyneth? Anytime. Especially when she's sharing beauty tips with us on how to look like a Rockstar's Wife, as part of a series of make-up looks created by Max Factor. And thankfully, ladies, even Gwyneth needs some make-up from time to time.

"Now that I'm not 19 years-old, I feel like make-up is more important, especially as I get older - good mascara and a little blush really goes a long way." She skips the foundation, though, opting for a few dabs of concealer instead.

Although Paltrow doesn't wear make-up everyday ('especially if I'm just working from home or picking up the kids'), her favourite make-up look is reassuringly simple. "For me, the make-up looks I always like best are sexy and understated beach style, but with a smudgy eye that looks almost slightly undone. I do feel very inspired by women who can wear both strong eye and lip make up at the same time, but it's not a look that necessarily suits me."

As for this particular look, the make-up is soft but polished. The make-up artist Mel Arter suggests first applying foundation with a brush (for a even finish), with a light nude blusher on the cheeks. Then contour the eyes with a bronze shadow, line with black kohl and apply lots of black mascara. Finish with a colour-popping, glossy fuchsia on the lips.

It seems like we're not the only ones who picked up some tips from the Max Factor shoot, either, as Gwyneth shares: "Overall, I'm starting to pay more attention as to how make-up is applied; although I'm still not great at doing it myself but I remain fascinated by watching make-up artists at work".

A lesson for us all then, on how to do a fantastic evening make-up look. Rockstar husband optional.
