Reds, plums, pinks and nudes, for the most part autumn is about statement lips. This week we've been puckering our way around the beauty aisles in search of the best colours for the coming season.

For lips easy on the purse to lips gloriously pursed, here are Independent Woman's four of the best:

Rose Dusk by Estee Lauder

Ladies shying away from this season's more daring shades may find something approaching solace in Lauder's Pure Colour Gloss Stick in Rose Dusk. Being both perfectly practical and perfectly pearlescent, the shimmery pink shade and soft shine finish should give lips an even colour and the conditioning formula will keep lips from drying out.

Available from Estee Lauder counters priced at €22.

MAC's Longwear Lip Creme in Goes and Goes Plum

One of this season's more inspiring shades and MAC's Goes and Goes has plum in abundance. Super bright, super alluring and almost certainly guaranteed to bring out the inner vamp, wear with cautionary nudes for eyes and skin for a perfectly creamy finish. A worthy addition to the beauty bag but almost certainly one best kept for evening wear!

Available from MAC, priced at €20

Clarins Barocco Rouge Prodige lipstick

Those of you looking for something a little more rouge may enjoy the bright wine delights of The Barocco Rouge Prodige lipstick by Clarins.

Part of Clarins' festive make-up collection, the lipstick is beautifully packaged in a gold vial and the high-performance formula means lips are left soft, shiny and full of colour.

Available from Clarins Counters from October, priced at €20

Rimmel 077 Asia lipstick

Flying the flag for ladies who want to keep autumn lips pale and interesting is Rimmel's new Lasting Finish Lipstick in Asia. Perfect for adding a little definition, the light pink shade will work well for less seasoned lipstick wearers and those who occasionally dip their toes in the water rather than those who wear lippy at every opportunity. As the creamy smooth texture has great staying power, top-ups can be kept to a minimum and lips should keep for as long as eight hours.

Available from Rimmel Counters, priced at €6.55.
