Aisling Keenan on how to save face with a few key products

Picture the scene. You've woken up after a night to remember (or one to forget, who knows?) and you realise you have to be somewhere important in half an hour.
You're not at home. All you have in your possession are the clothes you're wearing and the contents of your minuscule clutch bag. You look like some kind of jungle warrior because last night's slap is all down your face. Panic is setting in and making your already delicate tummy feel worse.
What's a girl to do? Get practical with your make-up, that's what.
Women, the fairer sex, are many things. Practical is one of them. We could show that MacGyver fella a thing or two. I heard of a woman who took a matchstick and a strip of Velcro and turned it into a washer-dryer, for goodness sake. So why not take that practicality and turn it into a live-saving, face-fixing, dignity-preserving tool?
Take the Three Item Challenge.
Your teeny tiny clutch bag has just enough room for three key make-up items. Put yourself in that situation, and think which three items you'd want to pull out to refresh and revamp your face.
To get you thinking, here are my picks, plus a couple from beauty experts who know how to make the most of their make-up.
Vaseline Lip Treatment with SPF, €1.99, from most pharmacies and all Boots stores
You can’t go wrong with an old reliable like Vaseline. I use it to make my lips shine, give my eyelids a bit of a glisten and to add some moisture to any little dry patches on my face.
Yves St Laurent Touche Éclat, €35, from Arnotts and Brown Thomas
This is a little pricey, but an absolute wonder product. It refreshes any dayold face without caking. It highlights like a dream and you can use it on so many parts of your face. Conceal those dark circles, highlight your brow bone, cover any blemishes, and a strip of it down the middle of your nose will catch the light and lengthen your face.
LOréal Double Extension, €16.92 from McCabes Pharmacies and Boots
A lick of mascara will open up your tired eyes and give them definition. Any mascara will do the trick, but Double Extension is a particularly great one for layering. The white tip separates lashes that are clumped together, while the black end gives great length and thickness. Beauty blogger and make-up expert Dawn Hill says tinted moisturiser with SPF would be one of her picks.
Clinique City Block Sheer SPF 15, €20.20, from Brown Thomas and Debenhams
“SPF is becoming increasingly important in beauty regimes as skincare experts advise wearing it every day. This sheer, tinted moisturiser will give your face a hint of colour, a fresh feel and with SPF you know you're protected.” Irish style-blogger Blanaid Hennessy would add her own favourite lip miracle to the mix.
Blistex Intensive Moisturiser Lip Cream, €3.49, from Boots and some pharmacies
“The best thing for chapped lips, and I’m convinced it somehow plumps your lips too. Addicted!” Once you choose your three lifesaving items, keep them tucked in your handbag at all times.
