Sometimes your beauty-product buying can get stuck in a rut. You go for the same old purchases, time after time, and never branch out to try anything different.
With so many new products coming out all the time, you've no excuse for complaining that your usual product doesn't do exactly what you want. Here are a few of my favourite innovations -- items that give me something more than the same old result.
Essence Better Than Gel Nails kit, €10.99, department stores and pharmacies nationwide. For anyone who wants the gel or acrylic-nail look without the potential damage to their nails and the huge price tag, this kit is perfect.
Personally, I hate the look of a full set of plastic, glue-on nails, so falsies were never an option for me. Essence has come up with a genius way to add a bit of length and glamour to any length of nail. You get everything you need in this kit — thin plastic tips, a top coat for serious shine, the glue you need and special remover so you don’t have to damage your nails by picking off the glue.
They’re easy to apply too, even with your bad hand. Try it — you'll be pleasantly surprised.
OSiS Dust It Mattifying Hair Powder from Schwartzkopf, €15, selected salons nationwide. When I first used this genius product on my very thin, very limp hair, I got lots of compliments on how thick and volumised my hair looked. I felt like a different person, and all because of a little pepper-shaker-style pot of mattifying powder.
Not only does this dry up the grease in your gruaig like dry shampoo, but it gives thickness, unbelievable volume and a good amount of hairspray-like hold. One of my favourite-ever hair buys.
Garnier Tinted Roll-On for Blemishes, €11.79, pharmacies and supermarkets nationwide. There’s nothing worse than getting a big spot. Invariably, one will appear on the morning of a big occasion, and you’ll end up caking it with heavy concealer to hide it. This new Garnier rollon covers and conceals your blemish while keeping it bacteria free, plus it helps the spot to heal and dry up. So it doesn’t just conceal, it works to clear your skin.
Yves Saint Laurent Pure Chromatics Wet & Dry Eyeshadow, €53, YSL counters nationwide from the end of March. These eyeshadows are a miracle for lovers of a bold eye look. When the gorgeous colours are used dry, they give a soft and silky coverage. When you wet your brush to apply them, the already strong pigment just gets more intense and the colour gets deeper. This is one of those products that gives you the look that you see created in the ads, which is a rare thing.
Avon Moisture Seduction Lipstick, €12.75. See www.avon.ie to find a representative. I can’t stand my lips feeling dry. That was one of the reasons I steered away from lipstick in the past — I was sure it would dry my lips out. Moisture Seduction is rippled with moisturising lip balm, gives great colour and it keeps lips feeling smooth. Red Kiss is my favourite shade — a gorgeous deepraspberry colour.
Don’t worry about the lip balm taking away from the pigment; the shade stays strong the whole way through.
