It took me an embarrassingly long time to realise it, but blusher really can transform your look.

Yes, I never leave the house without first applying mascara; of course foundation is essential for creating a good base. But only blusher can bestow an instant pick-me-up on the most tired and emotional of complexions.

Pink is flattering on pale skin, as are peach and apricot. But make sure to avoid brown tones, which have the unfortunate effect of making pale complexions appear almost dirty.

Apricot looks good on those with sallow skin, while tawny or rose shades are also very flattering.

Gel blush is great for those with oily skin, while a cream alternative (use your fingertips) gives a natural-looking glow to those with drier complexions. My preference is for powder, which creates a soft, polished look and works on all skin types.

To really work your blusher, apply after your base colour and preferably over a little bronzer. Use light strokes to brush outward over the apples of your cheeks (make sure to smile first, the exaggerated effect makes it easier to apply colour where you want) and then use a larger, softer brush or a foundation brush to help blend into your skin.

Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge for Lips and Cheeks (€26)

Unless you really want to channel the worst excess of 1980s make-up, it's best to keep your cheeks and lips in the same colour spectrum, and you've got no excuse to do otherwise with this natural-looking cream blush. The Pink Truffle shade gives a great sheer finish, but make sure to moisturise well beforehand, especially if you've got dry skin.

Bourjois Blush in Lilas D'Or (€9.55)

Actress Diane Kruger is among those who swear by this high-street brand. Boasting strong pigments, it'll last all day long and even doubles as an eyeshadow.

Chanel Joues Contraste in Espiegle (€36)

A sheer powder in a subtle pink shade with the lightest pearlescent sheen, this is the perfect accessory for a glam night out.

Max Factor Miracle Touch Cream Blusher (€10.79)

A nice formulation that blends easily to give a natural look. Plus a great price for those who want to experiment without committing to a pricey brand.

Sometimes blusher can be scary, but not with this little number. All you have to do is apply this award-winning, clear gel to the apples of your cheeks and in just a few seconds, you'll be sporting a blush in the best shade for your skin tone.
