We were spoilt in the few summers prior to this, in that we got to wear our summer clothes and summer make-up pretty consistently from May to September. This year, however, it's different. In which case, if you have a foreign break booked, you have an itch to get out the flimsy clothes and put on your holiday face. And given that you are starved of the opportunity to enjoy either, during a summer such as we're having, you can then tend to overdo it out foreign. Too many clothes, too much make-up, and an air of holiday desperation.

On holiday, a light base, a waterproof mascara and not very much more will see you get by looking like a better, more relaxed version of your at-home self. When you're wearing base on holiday, use less than normal, and apply it and blend out from the middle of your face towards the edges, where less coverage is required. Then, bring along something a little light-catching, a little lip-enhancing, a little eye-brightening, and you're sorted. And your suitcase is not weighed down with cosmetics, which is a good thing, given you need to get the wear out of every single summer garment you own.

Best Overall

Clarins Instant Light Radiance Boosting Complexion Base in Gold Bronze, €30.50, Clarins counters nationwide

The permanent-collection Apricot shade of this cream is a perfect winter warmer for the complexion, and this limited-edition Gold Bronze is a summer stunner. It's beautifully multi-purpose, according to your skin and how happy you are in it. You can use it on bare skin, or mixed into your base for added glow, or as a highlighter to be dabbed on your cheeks, your decolletage and even your legs. Wherever it goes, you get a subtle, golden sheen that speaks of circumspect sun-worshipping. "Subtle in a sexy way," said one panellist. "It looks like a natural kiss of sun - the expensive-holiday kind."

Best Brow Beater

Lancome Waterproof Eyebrow Gel-Cream in Taupe, €29, Lancome counters nationwide

We all know what a difference a groomed brow can make to the generally tidy appearance of one's face. This is also the case on holiday, even if you're relatively bare-faced otherwise. Go lightly with this brow product and you will instantly look more together. And, as a bonus, it's waterproof. We have chosen a neutral Taupe, but it comes in six shades, from Blond to Black. A double-ended brow brush (€19) can be bought separately. "The gel-cream is a lovely texture and it's not too thick or caked-on looking," said one panellist.

Best Lively Lips

Bobbi Brown Sheer Lip Colour in Sunset Pink, €26, Brown Thomas; Arnotts; House of Fraser, Dundrum Town Centre, D16

This is a bright pink that lends itself to a sunny destination and a bit of a tan. It's very bright, but the fact that it's a lighter texture than a full lipstick means that it's not too intense. However, if you fancy a stronger colour by night, there is a companion pencil (€22) with which you can initially fill in the lips. "Brighter than anything I'd wear at home, but ideal for a holiday," said one panellist. "More high-impact than a tinted balm, but with punchier pigment."

Best Lined Up

Mac Fluidline Eye-Liner Gel in Brassy, €19, Brown Thomas and BT2

These beloved eyeliner pots are not waterproof, but they are remarkably long-lasting and pretty much impossible to shift without an oil-based make-up remover. Which makes them great for holidays, when warm skin can be a bit more oily and slippery. This is a brassy gold that glimmers beautifully in bright light and is stunning against sun-kissed skin. "Gorgeous with green or blue eyes," said a panellist. "This and a mascara, and that's the holidays sorted."

Best Warm Light

Estee Lauder Pure Colour All-Over Illuminator, €45, Estee Lauder counters nationwide

The brand suggests that you go so far as to use this highlighter on your knees, as well as cheeks, temples, shoulders or decolletage. It's a lovely pale-pink colour that lends a warm pearlescence to tanned skin, with a pleasing creamy texture that blends beautifully and lasts well. "This is an ideal summer highlighter that falls between pearly white and bronzy," said one panellist.
