Beauty Panel: Mouthing Off... in style
As the weather gets warmer, it's time to go easy on the lips but we draw the line at lip gloss

Word is that lip gloss is about to make a comeback, but we're not buying it. Yet. For now, we're resisting the reappearance of that Noughties favourite and we're swinging in to spring with some sheer options. It will take more convincing until we're ready to go gloss, and re-enter the realm of keeping a different Juicy Tube in every handbag, and spending summer weddings peeling our hair off our sticky lips. So, in the spirit of keeping it sheer, we have some beauties here to lend sophisticated, understated colour and shine to your spring pout.
If you're going to go for a sheer lip colour, bear in mind that it's important to have your lips in good condition. All of our top-five favourites have moisturising and soothing properties, but they won't cure any lingering winter chappedness. Also, the sheer texture will emphasise any rough patches. So, a little exfoliation with your toothbrush and a bit of balm 10 minutes before you apply your lipstick, will prime your pout. Also, bear in mind that you can be daring with colour choice when you're keeping it sheer. Hot pinks or scarlet in the tube won't be as ostentatious on, but nudes will be very nude.
Tom Ford Lip Colour Sheer in Rose Soleil, €47, Brown Thomas Dublin and Cork
Not to be confused with the Tom Ford Lip Colours or, for that matter, the Lip Colour Shine collection. The former is full-on, grown-up lipstick, while the latter is very shiny and transparent. The Lip Colour Sheers fall somewhere in between. They're sheer, as the name suggests, but the pigment isn't gone in a couple of licks of your lips. We love this shade: a gold-y pink, with a little shimmer that is very sexy. "This lipstick's smell and feel are really luxurious, but it's subtly sexy and shiny, which I love," said one panellist.
Best Sheer Sculptor
Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy Shine Sculpting Lipstick in Discreet, €31, Estee Lauder counters nationwide
Yes, the name is a serious mouthful that covers everything you want from a lipstick. It has colour, it has shine, it has the power to make your lips look better. It's magic. Well, nearly. Packed with multi-faceted pigments and light-catching elements, this lipstick is great for thin lips, as it gives an impression of sheer, shiny plumpness. "Discreet is a good name for this shade," said a panellist, "but it's discreetly lovely. It looks dull and brown in the tube, but comes alive on the lips as a shiny, pinky, peachy number."
Best Sheer Oil
YSL Volupte Tint-in-Oil in Drive Me Copper, €25, YSL counters nationwide
Beauty has gone oil mad in recent years and, fair play to them, YSL has worked out a way to make it work in lip colour. This product is composed of five different oils, including macadamia seed and passion flower, but it's not the greasy affair you might imagine. It's like a gloss, with tons of pigment and without any stickiness. It's gorgeous, basically. "This colour isn't as coppery as the name suggests," one panellist said. "It's perkily pink but not too girlie; it's transparent and light-catching."
Best Sheer Stayer
Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Desinvolte, €31, Chanel counters nationwide
In the tube, this colour is a supercharged coral with some red through it, but it's a far more subtle affair on the lips. The name means free and easy in English, and it is a bit of light fun as a colour, a non-serious way to wear vivid orange-red. "I love this product because it has good staying power as sheer lip colours go," said a panellist. "By day, this is a gorgeously shiny, bright colour, and it can be given more impact by night if you fill in your lips with pencil first."
Best Sheer Depth
Urban Decay Sheer Revolution Lipstick in Sheer Shame, €19, Debenhams; House of Fraser, Dundrum Town Centre, D16
Sheer products for lips can get a bit lost against darker complexions, where more impact is called for. So, if you have darker skin, seek out berry shades and steer clear of pinks and even corals, which might be lost on you. In terms of texture, this lipstick is a lighter version of Urban Decay's Revolution lipstick, with loads of shine and decent staying power. "A deep, fruity colour that brought my skintone alive," a panellist said. "I like that it's sheer but without shimmer, so my lips look fresh and clean."
