Your weekend mix with Schweppes

Áine O Donnell

The weekend starts here! Find the perfect place to raise a gin and tonic with your weekend guide by Schweppes.

While you might have been dreaming of the weekend since Monday morning, thankfully it is nearly here. And the good news keeps on coming, the sunny weather is set to continue with Met Éireann announcing a ‘scorchio’ weekend of epic proportions. Our words, not theirs!

With good weather comes great responsibility – we have to make the most of the sunshine while we still can. There is plenty to do this weekend whether you want to have a bop at Life Festival or catch a short film in Cork, look forward to loads of fun in the sun.

With the weather on the up and a grand stretch in the evenings, it signals one thing: cocktail season! Beer gardens all around Ireland will be filled to capacity, barbecues will be pulled from hibernation in the garage for summer parties and cocktail umbrellas will sell-out in shops all around the country.

In keeping with the exotic weather we’ve been having here in Ireland, check out our whiskey ginger cocktail to get you all set for the weekend.

With cocktails and cool events, we have your weekend sorted:

Life Festival, 26-28 May, Belvedere House, Co. Westmeath

Now in its eleventh year, Life Festival is the most important date in any dance music fan’s calendar. Thousands will descend on Belvedere House in Co Westmeath for a weekend of rave revelry. You’ll get a chance to see some of the world’s best known electronic acts like Duke Dumont and Rudimental in the 160-acre grounds of the impressive Belvedere House. Day tickets and camping tickets for the weekend are still available but are selling out fast. If you are looking for more upmarket accommodation than a pop-up two-man tent for the weekend, you can book boutique camping in either tipis or bell tents for two or more people. Take a look at the full line-up and get your tickets here.

Pro 12 Final: Munster vs Scarlets, 27 May, Aviva Stadium, Co. Dublin

The culmination of a great year of club rugby is upon us with the Pro 12 Final taking place this Saturday in the Aviva Stadium. Following a historic win for underdogs Connacht last year, the Red Army will be hoping that the luck of the Irish will continue this year. Rassie Erasmus’ men face tough opposition from the traveling Welsh side Scarlets with Lions Jonathan Davies, Ken Owens and Liam Williams on their squad. This clash is the hottest ticket in town but don’t fret yourself if you miss out, there is nowhere better to soak up the atmosphere than at the pubs around the Aviva. Drop into Slattery’s for a drink and catch the game on the big screens. C’mon Munster!

Fastnet Film Festival, 24-28 May, Schull, Co. Cork

The wilds of the west of Ireland have proved inspirational in the world of film making in recent years so where better to host a celebration of all things film than in the village of Schull in West Cork? This weekend, film will take over the village quite literally with movies being shown everywhere from the local pubs to the village hall with some even being projected directly onto the sides of buildings. Expect the biggest names in Irish and international film-making like Lenny Abrahamson and Jim Sheridan as well as Philomena and The Queen director Stephen Frears. What Fastnet has become known for is showcasing great short films with a selection of shorts being shown throughout the weekend. Check out the full programme and book tickets here.

That's a wrap! Dubai. Bangkok. Singapore. Australia. New Zealand. Japan. #GnFnR #NotInThisLifetime Tour 2017

Guns N Roses, 27 May, Slane Castle, Co. Meath

“Take me down to the Paradise City” – for one weekend only, Slane in Westmeath turns into Paradise City, welcoming back rock legends Guns N Roses. The band last played Slane Castle 25 years ago during the summer of ’92 but Irish fans will get a chance to see original band members Axl Rose, bassist Duff McKagan and legendary axe-man Slash this Saturday for a reunion gig to remember. There will be support from Royal Blood as well as local lads Otherkin. The long awaited return of the band meant that tickets for Slane sold out in less than 24 hours. If you are one of the lucky 80,000 ticket holders, get that leather vest out of the attic and get practicing your head-banging for Saturday!

The People’s Market, Dun Laoghaire

With the weather heating up, the weekend will bring a mass exodus from the capital to where else but Dun Laoghaire? When heading to Dun Laoghaire, some things are a given: the walk to the lighthouse, the queuing to get your long awaited Scrumdiddly’s and a cocktail with a view of the sea. There are plenty of great places along the beach front but why not dine al-fresco in the sunshine – while you still can! The People’s Market in the middle of Dun Laoghaire has a little bit of everything but the food is the real draw. From Spanish-style fare to BBQ classics, there is plenty of choice and something to suit every taste. The hard part is deciding what to eat!
