Munster and Ireland legend Ronan O’Gara has spoken passionately about the ‘beautiful’ people of Haiti whom he is hoping to help through his role as an ambassador for the Haven NGO.

O’Gara, who recently visited Haiti, was speaking at the Dundrum Town Centre in Dublin today about what he experienced during his travels.

“It was hugely interesting - very, very different from what I expected. It was fascinating in so many aspects.

“But the fact is that the people have very, very little but they are beautiful people, and happy and enriched in their own lives.”

Through Haven, an Irish NGO, the Racing Metro coach is hoping to generate funds for the Hattian people and turn people’s attention towards their plight.

“There’s an awful lot of work to be done over there, but you can see that massive progress has been made.

“It’s very tough for the locals over there. I only created a fraction of awareness, and a bit of money over there goes a lot further than it does in the western world, so my point of view it was about creating awareness.”
