Video: Rory McIlroy made a brave decision to call off wedding - Padraig Harrington

Published 29/05/2014 | 14:37

Three-time major winner Padraig Harrington has described the decision of Rory McIlroy to call off his engagement to tennis star Caroline Wozniacki as "brave".

Last week, a visibly upset McIlroy revealed he had called off his wedding to the Danish former world number one after the invitations had been sent out.

He went on to win the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, the flagship event on the European Tour, with a closing round 66 on Sunday.

Harrington said that the 25-year-old had taken the brave decision to opt out of the relationship rather than take the easier path and continue.

"Everybody was surprised. I'm Rory was surprised and Caroline themselves," the Dubliner told

I'm not the close family source that comes out with the information but it seemed to coincide with the invitations coming out and it was obviously a shock for Rory the reality of getting married.

"It was a brave decision, there are many people who have gone through with things that they feel in hindsight that they shouldn't have.

"It really was a big decision to call it off and to take all that heat and pressure and stress. It would have been simpler to keep going.

"I'm sure it was very difficult for the both of them and it being played out in the media is tough as well

"I'm sure that's what he felt he had to do and he realised when those invites went out that he just wasn't ready for it."

Wozniacki looked out-of-sorts in her first round defeat to Yanina Wickmayer.

Iconic Irish golfer Pádraig Harrington and Dunnes Stores, the Iconic Irish retail brand which is celebrating 70 years in business this year, have teamed up to produce a new men’s golf clothing line exclusively for Dunnes Stores.
