When Ireland's greatest female athlete was honoured at the Youth Foundation awards dinner last December, her noted accomplishments included six gold medals from various European, World Track and World Cross-Country Championships.

Yet, when asked which one meant most to her, she picked the silver medal she won at the Sydney Olympics over her 5000m gold from a memorable performance in the 1995 World Championships. She then talked of a recent visit she had made to Cork, which included a trip to Bere Island. "I made a point of bringing the medal with me," she said, "because it struck me that there had probably never been an Olympic medal on the island before."
