AP McCOY might have had the quantity but Ruby had the quality. Because when it comes to Cheltenham there has never been anyone like the man who has been the festival's leading jockey for nine of the past 12 years.
And the result is that, until very recently, Ruby was the first national hunt jockey to spring to the mind of the casual racing fan.
It's reassuring to watch Ruby take charge of one of your fancies at Cheltenham. A win is far from guaranteed but you do know he will strive might and main.
Ruby driving a horse up the hill to prevail in a close finish has become the quintessential Cheltenham moment over the past decade. Long may he reign.
