It was regularly said of Gibson that if the All Blacks had their pick of overseas players he'd be very high on the list.

He was the complete footballer, seen at his best on the winning Lions tour to New Zealand in 1971 - and in an Irish shirt, probably in the Five Nations season of 1972.

That year Ireland began with their first win in Paris in 20 years.

They followed it by beating England in Twickenham, but the Scots and Welsh refused to travel to Dublin, blaming the Troubles.

That robbed Ireland of their best chance of a first Grand Slam since 1948, which would have been the perfect reward for a man at the peak of his powers.
