George Best

In an era when players count among their skills the ability to wave an imaginary card in the face of a referee, or to collapse like a cheap suit at the faintest of touches, it's worth remembering football used to be called The Beautiful Game for a reason, and that reason was George Best.

Whether viewed on grainy black and white television screens, or in glorious real life, the sight of Best weaving his way through a packed defence, doubling back on occasion to beat an opponent a second time just because he could, before finding the back of the net, will always remain more than sport. This was art, this was life at its most expressive.
