Teen star steers Granagh to glory

ALL-IRELAND CAMOGIE FINAL GRANAGH-BALLINGARRY 2-4 DAVITTS 1-3 REIGNING champions Granagh-Ballingarry of Limerick retained the O'Carroll Cup when they overcame a gallant Davitts side in the All-Ireland senior camogie club championship final at a wet and windy Tynagh yesterday.

Eileen O'Brien, a 17-year-old Leaving Cert student, was Granagh's star as they came from 1-3 to 0-1 behind at half-time to beat the Galway side on their home pitch.

O'Brien scored all but 1-1 of her team's total and she clinched victory with a sizzling goal midway through the second half.

The wing forward opened the scoring for Granagh with a point from a free after three minutes.

STRONG WIND

However, Davitts, assisted by the strong wind, soon began to take control and Lourda Kavanagh brought them level with a pointed free in the ninth minute.

The Davitts defence repelled a series of Granagh-Ballingarry attacks, and they went ahead with two further points from Kavanagh.

And the home side made a vital breakthrough three minutes before half-time when midfielder Catriona Finnegan drove in a long-range shot which dropped over the head of goalie Breda O'Brien to give the home side a 1-3 to 0-1 lead.

In the second half it was Granagh's turn to have the wind advantage. However, it was Davitts who piled on the pressure during the first ten minutes, but they squandered some good chances.

And they were made pay for their inaccuracy when Granagh struck for 1-1 within the space of 60 seconds.

In the 40th minute, Aoife Sheehan scored a fine point after a surging run down the right wing. And moments later Sheehan's sister Deirdre collected a pass from Jean Cullinane and scored a goal to leave just a point between the sides.

And four minutes later, O'Brien put Granagh back in the lead when she drove a sizzling shot to the roof of the net.

During the closing stages, Davitts tried every thing to get back into the game. However, the cham pions called on all their experience to hang on, and fittingly O'Brien had the final say, converting a 54th minute free to put her side four points clear.
