Worthy soundtrack to beautiful game
I never do plugs. But here is a really good idea. The people at Dublin-based Indiecater Records asked 32 indie bands from nine countries to come up with songs inspired by the teams in this year's World Cup. They've called the compilation Fast Forward and it's available for download from their website, indiecater.com, for a fiver, which is excellent value.
None of the bands involved are household names, but there are very few duds. I was particularly taken by Irlande by the Very Most, a band from Idaho who sound a bit like early REM. How you could not adore a song which begins, "You were once an empire like the Romans or the Huns, now your country's health system's ranked at number one."
Dublin band The Dirty 9s song "El Diego," is, appropriately, unhinged, OTT and rather magnificent while Spanish band Yellow Melodies contribute a mighty stomper entitled "Vamos Al Gandar Mundial,"
You'd be an awful curmudgeon if you didn't find quite a few things to like on a compilation which would be a super addition to any World Cup party. More proof that the great tournament makes people raise their game.
