Marcello Ferri, 29, owns the twitter handle @Marcello and was on the receiving end of a torrent of abuse last night.

Ferri told the London Evening Standard that he wasn't even watching the game when he came under attack, despite the fact that his profile pic bears no resemblance to the Real Madrid star.

“Last night I was in the gym and not even watching the football. When I got home I was getting loads of tweets including death threats. I was scared at first I just thought ‘What have I done?’," he said.

Ferri received messages of support from twitter users @thejohnterry and @rvp who have been on the receiving end of similar abuse.
