George Hamilton was left to cover the Netherland’s dramatic penalty shoot-out victory over Costa Rica on his own last night and Twitter users were quick to speculate on Ray Houghton’s absence.

The co-commentator has been at Hamilton’s side for throughout the tournament in Brazil, but last night the veteran commentator was left on his own for the 120 minutes of action plus the penalty shoot-out in Salvador.

The absence of the former Republic of Ireland international was keenly felt by RTE viewers who made some humourous suggestions as to where Houghton may have been during the broadcast.
