FAI forced to delete self-deprecating message to World Cup winners Germany

The FAI quickly deleted a self-deprecating congratulatory tweet to Germany last night after their World Cup final victory at the Maracana.

In a serious error in judgement, the FAI tweeted: "Congrats to @DFB_Team_EN 2014 @FIFAWorldCup champions, and our opponents for #Euro2016 qualifiers in October ***Gulp***."

Ireland were beaten by a combined score of 9-1 when the sides met home and away in the qualification for this year's World Cup.

The tweet was deleted soon afterwards but it still drew a lot of ire from Irish fans on social media.

The Scots, who are also in Group D for Euro 2016 qualification alongside Ireland, Germany, Poland, Georgia and Gibraltar, were much shrewder in their message to the victorious Germans.
