England’s World Cup defeat at the hands of a Luis Suarez-inspired Uruguay has proved to be the most popular game so far with Irish viewers.

England’s 2-1 defeat was sealed with a late strike from the now-banned striker and effectively ended their participation in the tournament and an average of 572,400 viewers tuned in for RTE’s coverage of the match.

At one stage during the match, the audience peaked at 815,900.

More than 3.2 million people in Ireland have seen some of the World Cup coverage on RTE meaning that almost 8 in 10 Irish viewers tuned in at some stage.

The figures indicate a 30pc increase on the average viewership from the tournament in South Africa four years ago.
