WATERFORD'S De La Salle College collected the Dr Tony O'Neill Cup for the first time after beating St Patrick's College, Cavan in a dramatic penalty shootout at Tolka Park yesterday.
Nerves were already shredded before Waterford goalkeeper Sean Whitty saved Dara McVeety's spot-kick, giving Conor Whittle the chance to stroke home the winning effort and spark scenes of wild celebration.
The Waterford lads, who started off at a blistering pace, should have gone ahead on 18 minutes when Chris Kervick volleyed his shot wide with only 'keeper Joe Masterson to beat.
The alert Masterson then produced a superb one-handed save to deny Conor Coad minutes later.
The Ulster champions were forced to soak up wave after wave of De La Salle pressure, with Conor Higgins clearing off the line from Kevin Flynn before the break.
McVeety let the Waterford school know his side were still in the game after the break and Craig Murphy found the net for St Patrick's with a spectacular overhead kick, only to be denied by the linesman's flag.
Despite a frantic end to the final period, the sides could not be separated in normal time.
Then, only a miraculous save from Whitty in extra-time denied Jonathan Leddy from five yards, before the 'keeper again produced the goods in the shootout.
