Whelan escapes punishment for ‘stamp’

STOKE midfielder Glenn Whelan is free to take his place in the Potters' side for tomorrow's Barclays Premier League clash with Wigan after it was confirmed the Football Association will not be taking retrospective action against him.

The Republic of Ireland midfielder has been widely criticised for a two-footed challenge on Javi Garcia during Stoke's FA Cup defeat by Manchester City on Saturday, but because referee Howard Webb saw the incident and did not send him off, the midfielder is in the clear.

Goalkeeper Asmir Begovic is set to return after making way for Thomas Sorensen in the cup, while defenders Andy Wilkinson and Ryan Shotton had been injury doubts prior to Saturday's match but came through unscathed.

Provisional squad: Begovic, Sorensen, Cameron, Wilkinson, Shawcross, Huth, Upson, Whelan, Nzonzi, Walters, Kightly, Etherington, Jones, Whitehead, Crouch, Jerome, Adam, Palacios, Owen, Shotton.
