The life of Mali international Moussa Doumbia was saved by the swift assistance of Paris Saint-Germain star Serge Aurier, after he came close to swallowing his tongue on the field during a game against Ivory Coast.

Doumbia crashed head first into the turf and suffered a fit after a challenge by Sunderland defender Lamine Kone, but the swift work of Aurier saved was crucial before medics quickly rushed on to the field to tend to the stricken midfielder.

Mali’s French coach Alain Giresse was quick to thank Aurier for his actions, as he commended the actions of the Ivory Coast star.

“Serge Aurier, along with one of our players, had the presence of mind to quickly put him (Doumbia) on his side and to use his hand to pull his tongue out as he was dying," said Giresse.

“It was an incredible reaction from Aurier. I spoke to him afterwards and I thanked him for his cool head.”

Aurier hit the headlines for the wrong reasons later in the game when he made a throat slitting gesture to taunt Mali players following his side’s second goal in a game that was won 3-1 by his Ivory Coast side.

Yet his antics were quickly forgotten as this video confirms he was the hero of the hour in this game.
