Essex Police has launched an investigation after video emerged online showing a Southend United fan running across the football pitch to attack rival Colchester supporters during Saturday’s Essex derby.

The incident took place towards the end of the League One match at Southend’s Roots Hall.

Footage shows both sets of fans exchanging insults before one Southend supporter charges onto the pitch and proceeds to throw punches at a set of Colchester fans.

Colchester United football officer PC Niki Howard said on Saturday: "Myself, Southend United's police football officer and Essex Police cannot be held responsible for the unacceptable actions of a minority.

"We will, however, do everything we can to identify those responsible and ensure they won't cause problems at football again."

The Essex derby was a heated affair with Colchester midfielder Alex Gilbey sent off in the first half.

Southend scored three goals in the last ten minutes to secure a 3-0 victory over their local rivals.

Southend manager Phil Brown commented on the violent scenes.

“It’s been a great day for us but it’s been saddened by the fracas in the far corner. That’s not something we advocate at the football club.”
