Van Persie in new Gunners' talks
ROBIN VAN PERSIE will hold formal talks with Arsene Wenger regarding his future during the next 48 hours, with the Arsenal captain's participation in the summer tour of Asia still undecided.
The Arsenal squad are due to fly out to Kuala Lumpur on Saturday afternoon to begin a pre-season trip that includes a match against Manchester City, who are preparing a £20m bid for Van Persie, at Beijing's Bird's Nest Stadium on July 27.
It is still unclear, however, whether Van Persie will travel to Asia, even if he has not secured a move away from Arsenal. He trained fully yesterday with the rest of the squad and, while there is confidence that he would continue to fulfil his duties professionally, no decision has yet been taken on whether he should board the flight to Malaysia.
Both Van Persie and Wenger want a swift resolution to the situation, but, unless a compromise is reached on him seeing out his contract until next season, they are dependent on other clubs to quickly firm up their interest with an acceptable offer.
Manchester City have the greatest financial firepower, both in terms of the transfer fee and the financial package they could offer. However, they face competition from both Manchester United and Juventus for Van Persie, who is understood to be attracted to both.
There also remains some small hope that the Dutchman could yet be persuaded to change his mind about signing a new contract, although there is no sense that Arsenal will be persuaded to improve on the five-year £130,000-a-week offer they are prepared to make.
Having sold Samir Nasri in similar circumstances last season to Manchester City for £24m, Arsenal will consider offers only in excess of £20m for a player who was the Premier League's top goalscorer last season. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
