Uruguay to visit aviva
IRELAND will play World Cup semi-finalists Uruguay in the Aviva Stadium next year, the FAI announced yesterday, WRITES NEIL AHERN.
The South American side, featuring Diego Forlan, the Golden Boot winner from last summer's World cup in South Africa, will play in Dublin on March 29, three days after the home European Championship qualifier against Macedonia.
The match is likely to provide a welcome boost to the coffers of the FAI.
The only single friendly between now and then is against Norway -- although the four nations tournament with Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales does take place next February.
Having played Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay already this year, Giovanni Trapattoni said he is looking forward to the challenge of the two-time world champions, who are placed seventh in the FIFA world rankings.
"Having watched Uruguay in this summer's World Cup, I was impressed by their performance, particularly against the Netherlands in the semi-final when they were narrowly beaten," said the Ireland manager.
"This game will act as further good preparation for the June return leg against Macedonia."
The last time Ireland played Uruguay was on April 23, 1986, when a Gerry Daly penalty earned the Boys in Green a 1-1 draw.
