TV omissions hard to fathom

IT seems daft to complain about television coverage of the League of Ireland given that, over a decade ago, one live game per year was something to get excited about.

Now, the pendulum has swung the other way with saturation a concern and clubs believing that live games affect gates.

But there's been some strange omissions from the schedule in recent weeks, with matches that were guaranteed to have a strong attendance anyway not selected for coverage.

Last Friday's meeting of St Patrick's Athletic and Shamrock Rovers in the FAI Ford Cup quarter-finals is an obvious example and their previous league meeting was an even more glaring omission.

The need to promote the league is such that the organisers could be forgiven for plotting their fixtures around likely TV dates at the beginning of the year.
