Trapattoni sweats on Dunne fitness after half-time exit
GIOVANNI TRAPATTONI will today name Richard Dunne in his squad for next month's crunch Euro 2012 qualifiers against Russia and Slovakia, but Ireland's manager faces an anxious wait to see if the Dubliner can shake off a recurring knee problem, writes Daniel McDonnell.
Dunne, who demonstrated his importance to the team with a commanding display in the victory in Armenia earlier this month, was replaced at half-time in Aston Villa's 1-1 draw with Bolton on Saturday and afterwards Villa's caretaker manager Kevin MacDonald revealed that the defender has been playing through the pain barrier in recent weeks.
On the brighter side for Trapattoni, Damien Duff lasted the duration for Fulham in their 1-1 draw with Blackburn, having shaken off the calf injury that ruled him out of the Armenia and Andorra encounters.
However, Keith Andrews missed out on that game, with his groin difficulties persisting. He faces a race against time to be ready for the double-header with the Group B top seeds.
