Tony Pulis has agreed a club record £13 million deal for Tottenham’s attacking midfielder Nacer Chadli but is facing a desperate three days to further strengthen his West Bromwich Albion squad after a lifeless stalemate against Middlesbrough.

Chadli is expected to undergo a medical at Albion’s training ground on Monday and will be the first arrival of the week, with Pulis targetting another four signings before Wednesday’s deadline.

The reinforcements cannot come quickly enough and Pulis will be hoping 27-year-old  Belgium international Chadli can spark life back into an Albion side whose deficiencies were exposed on Sunday as Middlesbrough easily secured a point to maintain their unbeaten start.

West Brom’s previous record signing was the £12million they paid to Zenit Saint Petersburg for the Venezuelan striker Salomon Rondon, although with Rondon scoring only ten goals in 37 league appearances, they will no doubt be hoping that Chadli makes a more immediate impression.

The Belgian, 27, was initially expected to leave Tottenham on loan, but Tottenham have agreed a deal to sell the Belgian international, making a profit of around £6million after paying FC Twente in the region of £7million three years ago.

Chadli was one of the seven players signed by Tottenham Hotspur to cover the loss of Gareth Bale. After a slow start to life at the club he went on to establish himself as a first-team regular, making 119 appearances for the North London outfit during his three-year stint, weighing in with 25 goals.

However, the midfielder has fallen out of favour with Mauricio Pochettino this season and has not made the bench for any of Tottenham’s league games thus far.

His path to the starting XI is blocked by Erik Lamela, Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli, whilst the likes of Heung-min Son, Joshua Onomah and Marcus Edwards appear to have crept ahead of him too.

West Brom were initially hoping to sign Southampton’s Jay Rodriguez on loan, but negotiations with Southampton are thought to have broken down before the club’s 1-1 draw with Sunderland this weekend, which Rodriguez scored in.

West Brom have made a mixed start to the new campaign, winning one, drawing one and losing one, to sit tenth.
