Many Premier League managers promote the theory that bargain buys are hard to come by in the January transfer window – yet this day marks the tenth anniversary of a signing that banishes the notion.
Nemanja Vidic’s arrival at Manchester United on January 5th 2006 was significant for so many reasons, not least the fact that the Serbian defender represented one of the first major signing made United boss Alex Ferguson following the controversial takeover of the club by American businessman Malcolm Glazer and his family.
Costing just £7m from Red Star Belgrade, Vidic went on to become a rock at the back for United.
His partnership with Rio Ferdinand at the heart of their defence was crucial to the trophies that flowed until his departure in the summer of 2014.
"As I keep pointing out, good defenders win you things," Ferguson said on the day he signed Vidic. "In my time we have had people like Steve Bruce, Gary Pallister, Paul Parker, Denis Irwin, Ronnie Johnson and Jaap Stam.
"This lad is really natural and athletic. I know you need good defenders and that is exactly what this lad is."
Vidic finished his United career with five Premier League title winners’ medals, a Champions League triumph in 2008 and three League Cup triumphs (2006, 2009, 2010),
He also has a place among the finest defenders to have played for the club where he still hailed as a hero to this day, thanks to golden moments like this:

So when you hear the men in the managerial hot-seats mutter suggestions that they cannot find any players to sign in the final days of this month’s transfer window, maybe they need to be reminded that there have been some sparkling signings made mid-way through a season.
United also completed the signing of Patrice Evra in the same 2005 window, while Liverpool succeeded in enticing Luis Suarez from Ajax mid-way through the 2010/11 season.
They are stand-out deals to confirm that gems can be unearthed in the January transfer window.
