Manchester United battle it out with Barcelona to sign PSG centre-back
Louis van Gaal, the Manchester United manager, is ready to go head-to-head with Barcelona in the last few days of the January transfer window in a bid to capture the signature of Paris St-Germain centre-back Marquinhos.
The 21-year-old Brazilian has played just 14 games in Ligue 1 this season after playing 25 and 21 in the two previous seasons. While Mundo Deportivo, the Spanish newspaper, claims that Barcelona are also keen on singing Marquinhos, United are understood to be favourites to sign the defender.
After reporting on Wednesday that United were interested in Éver Banega, the Sevilla and Argentina midfielder, his club has said they know nothing about any potential deal between the clubs.
Guillem Balagué, the well-respected Spanish journalist, has claimed United will not sign Banega while also saying it is unlikely they will sign James Rodríguez from Real Madrid during the January transfer window.
"There is no chance of James going in January and Sevilla are saying they know nothing about Manchester United when it comes to Ever Banega,” Balagué told Sky Sports.
