Manchester United and Manchester City look set to battle it out for the signature of Valencia's central defender Nicolas Otamendi.
Manager Louis van Gaal may ramp up interest in the 27-year-old after summer target Sergio Ramos committed his club future to Real Madrid.
Otamendi was granted an extended summer break due to his Copa America participation, but is unsettled at the club and is believed to have told club representatives he wants out of Valencia.
The La Liga side have placed a €50m valuation on the coveted defender with United believed to be prepared to offer up to €35m to entice the Argentinian to Old Trafford.

The Mirror and The Daily Mail have said that neighbours City are looking to steal a march on the Red Devils by getting ahead of the queue for Otamendi.
Valencia were reported to be seeking Eliaquim Mangala in return for allowing Otamendi to join the Citizens, but City representatives have ruled out such an arrangement.
Managala struggled to live up his billing in his debut campaign following a £31.8m move from Porto last summer, but has impressed in the opening two games of the season as Manuel Pellegrini's side sit top of the league following the 3-0 rout of champions Chelsea at the Etihad.
