Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger according to reports in Germany.
The World Cup winner admitted earlier this week that he was flattered by United’s interest and that has paved the way for his departure from Munich.
Louis van Gaal worked with the 30-year-old when he was manager of Bayern and it is understood one of Germany’s most consistently impressive players will cost £14m, with a three-year contract on offer at Old Trafford.
United are also pursuing another Bayern star in striker Thomas Muller who has been identified as the ideal replacement for Fenerbache bound Robin van Persie, but there has been no confirmation of that transfer yet.
Although Schweinsteiger was no longer guaranteed a first team place under Pep Guardiola, he is one of the most decorated players in European football, having won eight Bundesliga titles, nine domestic cups, as well as the European Cup, World Cup and World Club Championship.
He has also caught the eye several times when facing United in Europe and should add another dimension to United’s midfield, despite those who argue he is heading into the twilight of his career.
After 13 years in the first team at Bayern, Schweinsteiger was interested in a new challenge and he had made it clear to the German champions that the Premier League was his desired destination.
There had been increasing signs from Bayern that Schweinsteiger could be on the move.
Two days ago, the club's chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge revealed the player was interested in a possible move to England, although he did not specifically mention United.
“I have spoken to Bastian on the phone while we have been on holiday and will speak again now that he is back,” he said. “I cannot deny the fact that I have understood during these conversations that he is flattered by the interest from England.”
When asked last week if Schweinsteiger would be at Bayern next season, the club's coach Pep Guardiola said: "When I think about the next season, always Basti is here. But what will happen ... I don't know."
United are still looking to add at least two more players to the squad in this transfer window, although their primary focus will be to replace van Persie before the start of the Premier League season.
