Crystal Palace have emerged as the shock favourites to sign Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere on a season-long loan.
Confirmation that Arsenal are prepared to allow their England star to leave the club ahead of Wednesday’s transfer deadline came as a surprise on Monday, but it appears that talks over a possible move have been under discussion with numerous possible clubs.
Italian sides Juventus and Roma have joined Spanish side Valencia in being linked with a move for Wilshere, yet the chance to remain in London may be a deciding factor in Wilshere opting to make the move to Palace.
Alan Pardew’s side have already shown real ambition in the transfer market after sealing a £30m deal to sign striker Christian Benteke from Liverpool and adding Chelsea’s Loic Remy to their squad in a loan deal on Tuesday.
Yet the prospect of Wilshere making the move to Selhurst Park would add a finishing touch to an exciting squad rebuild for Pardew, with the 24-year-old midfielder determined to kick-start his career after asking to be allowed to leave the Gunners in a loan move.
With Santi Cazorla, Mesut Ozil, Mohamed Elneny, Aaron Ramsey and summer arrival Granit Xhaka all ahead of Wilshere in the battle to get into Arsene Wenger’s midfield line-up, Wilshere has clearly decided that he needs to move on in a bid to secure regular first team football.
Meanwhile Pardew eager to change the style of football being played by his team and a midfield featuring Wilshere and Yohan Cabaye, with a front two of Benteke and Remy would certainly give Palace an exciting look after a slow start to the new Premier League season.
