Tierney strike earns Mervue home replay
SPORTING FINGAL 1
MERVUE UTD 1
holders Sporting Fingal and First Division Mervue United will have to meet again after drawing at Morton Stadium last night.
Eamon Zayed gave Fingal the lead before Mike Tierney equalised for the Galway side.
Fingal started well in front of just 206 fans. Kevin Dawson, Zayed and Alan Kirby all forced saves from Ireland U-19 goalkeeper Ger Hanley. Liam Buckley's team then took a deserved lead in the 14th minute as Conan Byrne's cross found Zayed, who slid in from a yard to score.
Mervue, who hardly got out of their own half in the opening 15 minutes, began to get into the game and Enda Curran shot just wide of Brendan Clarke's goal before Rory Gaffney also came close.
Hanley was on hand in the 19th minute to stop Fingal going 2-0 up, as he made an excellent right-handed save from a low Byrne shot.
Mervue got their equaliser in the 36th minute. After Clarke came and missed Alex Lee's corner, Curran headed the ball back across the goal and Tierney headed in from six yards.
Four minutes before the break Fingal captain Shaun Maher was sent off for a two-footed challenge on Mervue goalscorer Tierney.
The home side continued to attack, though, and visiting defender Kevin Crehan did brilliantly to block a Kirby effort.
A disappointing second half yielded few chances, with Tierney going close for the visitors and Byrne and Shane McFaul doing likewise for Fingal.
