Three Celtic stars lined up for Great Britain Olympic squad

Thursday December 22 2011

CELTIC manager Neil Lennon has revealed Scott Brown, James Forrest and Adam Matthews have all been lined up as potential Team GB players for next summer's Olympics in London.

The Scottish Football Association, like their counterparts in Wales and Northern Ireland, are against their players competing amid fears over the national team's independence.

Lennon said: "I haven't had the chance to speak to the players but Scott Brown, James Forrest and Adam Matthews were sent formal invitations as it were.

"We will sit down with them over the next few weeks and see what they are thinking. If they want to go I can't stop them.

"It's the timing of it with the start of the season next year or the (European) qualifiers.

"My view is that football is not an Olympic sport, although it is a great spectating sport.

"But that is my own view, not the view of the club but if the players want to go, I am not going to discourage it."

Last week the English Football Association said no player who travelled with England to 2012 would be considered for Olympic selection, potentially ruling out the likes of Jack Wilshere and Wayne Rooney from the side.

Team GB men's manager Stuart Pearce said: “We have had discussions as we come now to notifying the long list of the players who could potentially be selected and it is important to make clear what we have agreed regarding England players who will be at Euro 2012.

“We have agreed that any player who boards the plane to the European Championship in Ukraine and Poland will not be considered for selection to Team GB.

“It’s a sensible football decision when you consider the demands on players, and it now leaves no room for doubt for players and their clubs about next summer and the two major tournaments.”

The FA began notifying home associations and players of those on a long list for potential selection last week . Players are asked to confirm whether they would be available for selection.
