Tale of woe: red army hold upper hand in recent battles

Oct 8, 2010: Ireland 2 Russia 3(Euro 2012 qualifier): Ireland were 3-0 down after 50 minutes and didn't look like scoring until Robbie Keane put one away with 18 minutes remaining. Shane Long hit the net six minutes later but an equaliser, which would have been as undeserved as it would be unlikely, never came.

A goal from Damien Duff gave Ireland the lead in a hard-fought clash but Sergei Ignashevich pulled one back before half-time to earn the Russians an important point at Lansdowne Road

Ireland found themselves trailing by two goals at half-time in Moscow. Although Gary Doherty pulled a goal back, Russia struck again. Clinton Morrison got another to give Ireland hope but a Phil Babb own goal, after coming off the bench, made it safe for the home team.

Steven Reid opened the scoring at Lansdowne Road after just three minutes with a goal from outside the box. Robbie Keane followed up 17 minutes later and Ireland kept Russia at bay for the rest of the game.
