Swansea stopped the rot with a 2-0 victory over Stoke but remain in the bottom three of the Premier League.

Fernando Llorente's early header and a deflected Tom Carroll second-half strike gave Swansea their first win in seven games and lifted some of the gloom around the Liberty Stadium.

Swansea were given a huge helping hand when, with the score at 1-0, Marko Arnautovic blazed his 69th-minute penalty high over the crossbar and into the disbelieving Stoke supporters behind the goal.

TWEET OF THE MATCH

"There was exactly one minute between Marko Arnautovic's missed penalty & Tom Carroll's goal for Swansea." - The BBC's Match of the Day account shows what a difference 60 seconds can make.

STAR MAN

Tom Carroll. Helped Swansea get on top in the midfield battle despite the efforts of Joe Allen in the Stoke engine room. Passing was good and made some intelligent runs from deep before striking only the second Premier League goal of his career - aided by the help of a deflection off the unfortunate Allen.

VIEW FROM THE BENCH

Swansea boss Paul Clement had called it a 'must-win' game after a desperate run of one point from six games had dropped his side into the relegation zone. Clement gambled by changing formation but the diamond system sparkled for Swansea and Gylfi Sigurdsson was more dangerous in a central position. Stoke manager Mark Hughes must be fearing the Potters' campaign is petering out, but Marko Arnautovic might have cured their travel sickness had he converted from the spot.

DATA POINT

England goalkeeper Jack Butland featured in a Stoke side for the first time since March 19, 2016. A week after that 2-1 win at Watford, Butland fractured his ankle on international duty in Germany and it has been a long road back for the 24-year-old who has twice undergone surgery. But Butland looked rusty and unconvincing with the ball at his feet until he made a couple of morale-boosting saves late on.
