The latest victim of Joey Barton's ferocious Twitter criticism is the player himself, following a bizarre post-match interview after his league debut for Marseille on Sunday night.
Barton has attracted almost 1.8 million followers on the site, largely by wading into every contentious issue in football and offering his unique and often aggressive take on it.
So when he was interviewed after Marseille's 1-0 win over Lille and he adopted a strange French accent to answer questions – much like Steve McClaren's infamous Dutch twang when at Twente – the Twitter world waited to see how he would react to the many who mocked him.
To his credit, Barton replied: "Steve McClaren, eat your heart out... In my defence, it is very difficult to do a press conference in Scouse for a room full of French journalists. The alternative is to speak like an 'Allo 'Allo! character."
Meanwhile, Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye has undergone groin surgery and will be out for several weeks.
