Southampton v Sunderland - story of the match
Published 27/08/2016 | 17:51
Stand-in Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford's cruel late error gifted Southampton a 1-1 Premier League draw at St Mary's, with Jay Rodriguez hitting the late leveller.
Jermain Defoe thought he had won the clash for the Black Cats, blasting home a late penalty he had won for himself.
But the razor-sharp 33-year-old striker had to watch on in frustration as the highly-promising Pickford was unable to deny Rodriguez with what should have proved a regulation save.
TWEET OF THE MATCH
"Over the moon, beeing involved in the PL hopefully more to come" - Sunderland's substitute goalkeeper Max Stryjek dreams of following Pickford into Premier League action.
Jermain Defoe - Sunderland's 33-year-old former England striker has still got it. The sharpest forward on display all day, Defoe was canny enough to outwit Jose Fonte to win the penalty, then buried it without a second thought.
MOMENT OF THE MATCH
Just as Sunderland were aiming to close out victory, up popped Jay Rodriguez with a decent 20-yard effort. All watching expected goalkeeper Jordan Pickford to collect, but somehow the ball squirmed under his body. And with that, Southampton had a barely-deserved point.
New Saints boss Claude Puel has a host of striking options at his disposal, but so far seems unsure how best to deploy his forward line. The home crowd bayed for Shane Long's introduction off the bench, then were bemused by Puel leaving the ineffective Charlie Austin on the field. Rodriguez then salvaged a point. Sofiane Boufal could join the club from Lille next week, and Puel will have to rank his forwards quickly to drive Saints up the table.
